Networking is a marathon, not a sprint. The object is not to run into a networking event an grab as many business cards as you can. The main objective of a networking event is to get to know at least one person.
Find out about your new contact’s business, what they’re looking for in a client, and try to figure out how you can help. You don’t have to sell them anything, or turn them into your client. If you feel like you have a connection, ask if you can follow up with a phone call or email in the next week or two. And then do it!
Grow your relationships with care, and the growth of your business will follow.
